IMPERIAL HOLDS HEALTH AND SAFETY WEEK
The
first Health and Safety Week celebration was held from 25th
to 27th May 2006. The aim was to sensitize students, staff
and the immediate community of Kudenda and even parents
on various topical health issues. The event started with
a lecture tiltled " Environment and Safety". This
was delivered by an environmental expert Mr. J. Izumwanne
who delt extensively on issues of waste disposal and pollution.
His paper was supported with extensive visual displays of
the negative effects of pollution on society and the hazards
posed to
society by poor waste management. This lecture was followed
by a very interesting paper from the Federal Road Safety
and Corp Marshal titled " Safety on the Road".
A film on recent road accidents on the Kaduna raod was shown
which proved very touchy. A Road Safety Club was formed
with the formal inauguration slated soon.
There
was also a lecture and films from a Non- Governmental Organisation
(NGO) - GENDER ACTION TEAM ON HIV/AIDS on the causes, transmission
and prevention of HIV/AIDS. The title of their lecture was
" ABSTINENCE" An Anti-AIDS Club was formed by
students. There were papers delivered by the Resident School
Nurse Miss Nkechi Okorie on " Hygiene and Personal
Health. It dwelt on the challenges faced
by the School Clinic in the management of various health
conditions of students. The College Guidance and Counselling
Department also presented a paper on Drug Abuse and Addiction.
Medical Examinations by the National Eye Centre Kaduna for
students and staff were conducted during these periods.
The results were very revealing as many students and staff
needing urgent eye and other medical treatments were discovered
and either treated on the spot or refered to higher medical
clinics/ hospitals.
The activities were rounded up with a " COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL
SANITATION EXERCISE" which involved two activities
by staff and students :
- A road walk of over 10 kilometres
- Picking of wastes from the streets of the Community to
sensitize them on the need to maintain healthy environment
and good personnal hygiene. There were various Novelty matches
between staff and students as well as other women groups
from Kaduna urban. The activities were witnessed by many
students from other Colleges and members of the Press as
well as parents and other invited guests. The program proved
very rewarding and a decision has been taken by Management
to make the celebration an annual event.
