SCIENCE AND ARTS EXHIBITION

The Annual Science and Arts Exhibition holds around November, of every year at the School Examination Hall. This event normally coincides with the Open / Visiting Day for the month. It is usually chaired by prominent citizens, community leaders, parents or government officials. Parents are requested to avail themselves of their services whenever they are called upon to partake in this program.

The Science and Art Exhibition is meant to inculcate in students the spirit of team work as they are expected to work in groups. It is also intended to develop talents in them and promote the sense of commercial enterprise and self reliance.

Previous years’ exhibitions had many group experiments to show how things work. These include:

  • Assembling of Computers by the Computer Club members.
  • Construction of Quiz Boards for use by Science Club
  • Manufacture of Cosmetics (Soaps, Pomades etc.) for sale to the School Community.

Prizes were usually awarded to best displays. Previous exercises proved to be most interesting and well organized. There were visitors from many schools in Kaduna as well as the members of the Press and other invited personalities. The school band was in attendance to provide additional side attraction.

EXHIBITION 2002
COMPUTER CLUB DISPLAYS
  • Identity card making using Corel Draw
  • Computerization of school enrolment

The Science and Arts exhibition is held every October. The objectives are:

  • Promotion of vocational skills in students.
  • Development of basic skills in science and arts.
  • Promotion of team spirit among students.
  • Development of entrepreneurial skills among students.

On each occasion, a theme is selected for emphasis. The theme for 2002 exhibition for example was “Education towards self employment”. This scheme was chosen to drum it clearly into the heads of students that white collar jobs are now difficult to find and emphasis should shift to self-employment. Students were therefore encouraged to select group projects which have some bearing with self employment. Among projects displayed were:

  • Soap making
  • Burglary Alarm system
  • Wailing Siren
  • Sand Filter bed
  • Identity Card Design using Microsoft Access
  • Art works using Core Draw
  • Cake making and other Confectioneries
  • Greeting Cards
  • Paintings
  • Furniture making etc.

School management is already considering commercializing some of the works. For example, school management is considering contracting out construction of dormitory beds, dinning hall tables/benches as well as lockers to students. Similarly the school plans to buy the soap from the exhibition for use iin the kitchen and general laundry. The entire student population will be compelled to patronize the soap as well. Proceeds from the sales would be used to purchase Printing/Stamping machines to further improve on the project. The expected revenue from these projects are high and run through the years and will provide a source of income for students and their clubs. Accordingly the school authorities have started plans to develop a permanent Exhibition Ground for the annual event. Parents and guests were impressed with the 2002 edition and went home satisfied. Staff and students have pledged to make future editions even more exciting. All new students should brace up to these events.
